Look at this series called Portrait of a Lady, from the recent WSJ Magazine, photographer Amy Troost. Can you take your eyes away? Some of the most captivating portraits I've ever seen.

And even more to be inspired by their work. For me that's Gisue Hariri. Her fearless, innovative approach to architecture as the co-principal of Hariri & Hariri, blows me away over and over again.

A Room of One's Own.

You know when it's been so long since you spoke with someone...finally when you do, you don't know where to start? That's how I feel. I've been working on this post for a week. aaahhhh..

...So I returned from Guatemala at the end of September, then moved into a new space. Or should I say my studio dream. I've been wanting my own space for some time...looking on and off for close to a year. Since moving in, getting comfortable, organizing, designing and running the business left me little energy to write the blog. Sorry about that.

When it comes to interior design, I need to live in a space. As it is, I'm still working on the inspiration/planning wall opposite the blanket and pillow display. But I absolutely love it...And am satisfied with the progress made so far. Here's some shots around my spot.

One of the ever-changing inspiration boards...yellows, blues, corals...looking ahead to spring. My daughter's watercolor peeks through. I'm so proud of her.

Did I say blue...and green are big colors for us going into spring.. Stay tuned!

Our understated Hopi Stripe lavender pillow looks great with some new Kuba cloth that's just arrived, soon to be made into great accent pillows.

And the Hopi Stripe slate pairs well with more African fabrics waiting to be cut for pillows.

Today is my last day in Guatemala. I'm feeling so thankful and privileged to have spent a week here...exploring and falling in love with the land and people, history and tradition. My main reason for being here has been to develop a new collection, but I've found so much more.. Right now I just want to express thanks while it all sinks in.

My husband and I took a little stroll along a tiny beach one of our days on Block Island. The beach curved to a small alcove of rocks, tall grasses and rustic sand facing out to the west. Suddenly he suggested we take a few action shots jumping into the air from the ground as well as off of some small rocks. At first I wasn't really feelin' his idea...but as usual was pleasantly surprised with the results. This was just what I needed to reset my mood. Fun!

I'm proud to introduce two new blankets for fall 2011. The new Riad Blanket, inspired by the inner courtyards of the hidden riads of Morocco and the textures found within it's walls--plaster, mother of pearl, terracotta. And my new Usonian Blanket. It's inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian philosophy of efficient home design and the textural elements common to these spaces--tones of wood, leather, tile, metal..light and dark. Our Saba Chief Blanket is re-imagined with a slight color enhancement. All come with matching pillows available in our standard 22x22, 12x22 as well as custom sizes.

My Peace of Paradise.

I spent the last week of summer with my family on a little island that represents a place of peace and paradise for me. Block Island. It's faded, rustic beauty and glorious lack of chic leaves me immediately relaxed. I can rest. Just be.

As I catch up this week and allow the reality of summer's end sink in, here are some of my favorite images of this perfect place showing colors and textures that caught my eye.

I was honored and beyond thrilled to discover ELLE DECOR featured my collaboration with Carini Lang, a beautiful, limited edition blanket collection named Waters Edge. I designed the diamond weave structure with my Peruvian hand weavers, then Joseph Carini took the blankets to Nepal (where his infamous rugs are made) and dip-dyed them using his plant-based dyes. The collection is currently offered at HB Home.

What's Old is New Again

Just wanted to share the after photos of the pillows made from the vintage Aso Oke tapestries that arrived from Nigeria a few weeks ago. Most often, the original textile dictates the design of the pillow. The best example is the 3rd pillow, as the fabric was turned sideways. Since the embroidery was spread out width-wise, it was best to group them together by cutting the tapestry vertically.

We also try to cut around the "imperfections" such as marks or wear-and-tear since these pieces are at least 50+ years old and have traveled continents and were used in everyday living as well as for special occasions. Sometimes it's not possible, but I think it adds to the character of the piece, reminding us there's history & meaning. I like to daydream about the previous owners and the sights & sounds these pieces existed with in a far away land.

I think they are just gorgeous, so interesting and unexpected. Below is the original post.

We just received three new vintage aso oke tapestries from Nigeria. I love the unexpected color and textural combinations found in so many of these pieces. Aso Oke translates "high cloth" and were originally made for special occasions and ceremonies to be worn, mostly by men. These pieces date back to the 1950s and 60s. Narrow panels, hand woven cotton and lurex are sewn together creating a beautiful tapestry.

I deconstruct them, and create pillows here in NYC. I love the character as I see the worn areas, knowing many traveled continents and lived a very full life before coming to me. Just amazing.

Yesterday I discovered photographer Brie Williams on the popular blog Desire To Inspire. Williams captures homes and spaces like very few can. Eclectic, natural, soulful, from another time. Really...even just the mood she presents...is perfection.

So comforting. So exciting. I'm so at home with her vision.

Each day began with a glass of papaya or passion fruit juice.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit Lima has been a layover to other "more interesting" places in Peru. I was wrong. Lima has a rich cultural mix of influences, is visually inspiring and offers some of the best food I've ever had. The most inspiring aspects of my trip came down to (4) things: People, Food, Color and Texture.

First of all I was in great company...a group of about 15 designers and buyers invited to visit and connect with artisans at the Peru Gift Show and Peru Moda. Of course my focus was textiles, but there were beautifully crafted ceramics and pottery, carved wood and metal.

We enjoyed a private tour of Museo Amano, the largest, most diverse collection of Peruvian artifacts held by a single family. Over and over, my eye kept going to the jewelry and of course textiles. Below, necklaces made of coral, turquoise, even feathers, dates back to 600 and 1300 BC.

I found color inspiration over and over again in what's called the Indian Market in Mireflores, a labirinth of shops...the jewelry, textiles...again. Imagine a necklace made of fish scales...

Two wonderful women I met in Peru... Ellen Dorsch, founder of Creative Women, develops beautiful textiles mainly in Ethiopia for the purpose of creating economic opportunities for women. Iliana Perez is a buyer for the San Diego Zoo. I traveled Lima with one or both of them most days. We explored the local artisan shops and open air markets while bonding over the local cuisine.

In Peru, they fuse flavors like no where else I've been. The Chinese and Japanese have long histories there. It's readily found in the cuisine, both classic and contemporary. We dined at a very typical Peruvian restaurant, Attos as well as a more modern restaurant La Mar, in Mireflores, known for it's contemporary take on ceviche and sushi. I enjoyed at least one pisco sour each day. La Mar's was the best.

Interesting color and texture was also found in Lima's architecture. The iron work on gates of buildings and homes as well as the colors all around the city were so interesting to me. Many were subtle and unexpected.

Graffiti on the outside of a sushi restaurant. Some of the unexpected art that added to Lima's architecture. Japanese design and it's contribution to the feel of the city is felt throughout.

Possibly more important than all of this...is this trip reminded me of how thankful I feel to already be working with the amazingly warm people. Everyone seems to take such pride in their work--taxi driver, server, cook...artisan.

I was in Lima, Peru this week. A short trip. Feeling honored to be among other designers and buyers, gathering inspiration, meeting with partners and making new connections. I'll do a round up when I get back to New York.

Today a friend, the amazing design creator Nestor Santa-Cruz emailed me a "teaser" image of a recent project he completed in Potomac, Maryland. Wow. So simple, yet brilliant. The textures of wood, leather, hues of tan, cream and white accented with sparks of black and blues. I've got to ask who the artist is...

Studio Dream.

Things really start to happen when you put yourself out there. It's been proven to me over and over again. It's been a year since moving into my shared studio. Over these months, I've seen highs and lows. A lot of uncertainty, fear...so much patience. I'm still here, thanks to support from family, friends and people along the way who decide to give my work a try. I'm so grateful.

With each new major change, I have to let myself get to the point where I can taste the next step. I can see it almost exactly.

Now, my attention turns toward the prospect of having my own studio. To create a world, no matter how small, within four walls and hopefully a lot of natural light. Emotionally I'm ready. And that's the most important part.

I came across photos of Isabel Marant's studio on Simone LeBlanc's blog. I'm in love and couldn't possibly sum up what makes Marant's work so amazing. But these images convey that "thing".

I've been soaking in as much visual inspiration as I can find. And images I came across on Habitually Chic, that fuel this desire inside and what I hope will be in the near future. Will keep you posted.

Highlights and Inspiration.

I exhibited my textiles at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show last weekend and it was a thrill on several levels. For example, today we discovered Apartment Therapy included my blankets and pillows in their Textile Trend Watch...our reds and oranges hit it on the mark. It feels so good to be in such great company such as Diane von Furstenburg and WoolfHome among others.

Sometimes the greatest inspiration comes from where it all began. The first memory that comes to mind is growing up hearing the words,"I'm proud of you." My mom and dad showed me a lot of love. But with regard to my talents and passions, my dad would always tell me how proud and happy he was to see me doing what I love...and it continues to today. I think I heard those same words just 2 days ago. It feels great to dedicate my success to my parents. It feels right.

Over the last 2 weeks, my eye keeps going back to Paul Smith's collection for Fall 2011. For this collection, he was inspired by the full moon. Go figure...
I love the volume, select colors...a great burnt yellow, orange/ cognac...highlighting shades of gray and a bit of metallic for good measure. And blue...a teal/cerulean...a royal classic.

Maria Cornejo's shapes and silhouettes are genius. I think the way she interprets volume and shape are specialties. So modern, so hip, so chic. The lines she creates with seeming effortlessness...The way many of her creations are "pieced" together are extraordinary, I'm left speechless. I can only put her on my inspiration board. The fact she's a fellow Brooklynite is icing on the cake.

I'm really into color blocking and cognac as a neutral right now. But I don't think it's going anywhere. Somehow color blocking has found it's classic. Here Phillip Lim's a master for RTW Spring 2011. He presents the cognac in high gloss. One can't ignore. For me a nod toward a modern Usonian sensibility. The details--the matte sequins, the slightly avant garde hair--take it one step further. Loving how the clean white accentuates the dominant color.

I've got to look away or else mesmerized.

A New Look.

If you're here, it's pretty simple. CURATEDCHIC has a new look. I'm really proud of how far the look has come and that it now feels more personal and provides a better backdrop to showcase what inspires me and my work. It's been a little quiet over the last 2 months, but please stay tuned for more frequent posts as well as added features including Q&As with other artists and designers as well as my favorite product finds.

But the new look of our blog is only a part of a larger project. Over the past several months, friends and colleagues have encouraged us to share more about the blanket design process including how I work with artisans in Peru who work help translate my designs into 3-dimensional works of art. For almost 2 months I've been working on the redesign of the DBA website with Indie Design Studio, my new web designer. I'm proud of how the new website will help share our story with anyone who values hand made and the unique contributions of artisans around the world. Please take a look.

The maxi skirt.

A great blue.

A great green--medium malachite or emerald?...Accented with army green and a hint of camel..hhmm.

Ice blue. Metallic nude.

The parka.

Yellowy-gold. Metallic. Let's face it. Juana Berga makes it look even better.

Wasp with a little more drama. The genius is in pairing pink and almost-red.

A great orange, but more red. And the Aztec skirt in orange. A hint at monochromatic, but no matchy-matchy here.

A nude blushy rose and cognac?...And cut-out top...hhmmm.

Pastel lavender. Cognac is a neutral. A good pairing.

...or should I say Jenna Lyons and her team. No matter, there are some great elements here. I'm loving the very simple, straight forward approach to the showing, which seems to have been popularized by another one of my favs SUNO New York.

:: The Last 30 days.

When I begin to think about all the wonderful blessings that have come my way in the last month I'm frankly overwhelmed. It's not like I didn't know what was coming. Everybody knows the magazines produce a few months in advance. But I wasn't prepared for the impact I felt when reading my name--and the word "her" referring to me--on page 71 of the October issue of ELLE DECOR.

Then last week my November ELLE DECOR arrived earlier than expected. This was the first time seeing the actual photo. Seeing what started as a 2-dimensional drawing and yarn colors I poured over for weeks now a blanket placed into context..A pairing of what's practical and beautiful was an amazing feeling for me. The Onni Saari painting is breathtaking...

Finally it will take some time to absorb seeing my name listed among such companies as ABC Carpet & Home and Matouk. Besides Matt Berman has amazing taste. The art, the furniture, the color arrangement. Everything was chosen for a reason and has it's place among the rest. An honor.

I've been in love with SUNO for almost 2 years now. I think it all started with a very small ELLE blurb and photo of founder Max Osterweis leaning over his collection of kangas that first captured my attention... I'm equally intrigued with his aim to revive Kenya's textile heritage. The story as well as these amazing designs lit a fire that continues to burn. So naturally SUNO is one of the first collections I look for when Fashion Week rolls around. I'd like to share my favorites from the Spring RTW2011 collection...

In Touch.

Has a book every made you weep? It's never happened to me until yesterday. I could not put the book down -- A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Coincidentally the last film that made me cry was The Kite Runner also written by Hosseini. It's Hosseini's language. So sensual, truthful, cutting heart-felt.

A Thousand Splendid Suns focuses on two women. While Kite Runner was the story of two boys. Yet both novels perfectly captures the innocence of youth, reminds us of who we are at the core. We love, we hate, we fight against ourselves.. Each of us have a unique start in life.

This book was especially sad, because it wasn't based on fantasy or exaggeration. Some women in this world never have the freedom to reach for, let alone realize their full potential.. I was brought back to my childhood and my own loss of innocence. I thought about how life experience shapes who I am today underneath is all..

Fear of failure, insecurity, anxiety over the unknown... It exists in all of us.

After a good cry, I'm simply reminded there's so much to be thankful for--as a woman, a wife, a mother, a daughter.

It's been an exhilerating and slightly overwhelming couple of weeks. We had a great NYIGF, met and caught up with some amazing people (like the great John Dransfield and Geoffrey Ross of Dransfield & Ross and Heather Clawson of Habitually Chic)..Heather included me in the blog the next day. An honor.

And good friends (like Malene Barnett of malene b handmade carpets and Tina Shoulders of Laidback pictured here--stopped by. Also Karen Young of Hammocks and High Tea and Anishka Clarke of Ishka Designs took time out of their busy schedules to say hi!

Words can't explain the invaluable support of family..

We also officially began a new part of our business--wraps and scarves. Several of our home stores purchased them. And a very chic men's shop opening in Soho will offer then for fall!

I didn't anticipate how quickly our pillows would multiply, born from our small collection of alpaca blankets and new linen fabrics. Suddenly the website is out-of-date.. That's another important project to come. We're working on more comprehensive, intuitive and user-friendly HTML site with the option to finally access from our iphones and ipads! Yay!

A special thanks to my husband for giving up his weekend to work 2 long days in addition to all the schlepping and setup preparations..

All in the Details. Anna Sui.

I thought it would be fun to take a closer look at some of Anna Sui's amazing details found in her Fall 2010 RTW collection.

She's a master of mixing both patterns and textures. She's able to tone down hot, bright pinks and purples with earth tones.

Who knew you can layer two very different greens on the same outfit.. You know I love that ochre/mole with a touch of gray going on..

And somehow she finds a place for nude. I'm not usually a fan of irridecent fabrics.

So glad the fur hat is back for another fall/winter season.

My eyes keep seeing this play of purples, blues and reds.. I'm loving this color combination.. I think it's lovely, sophisticated and can go both casual and formal, a sort of classic bohemian sensibility.

A Privilege.

Pursuing my passion for textiles is both a pure dream and a bumpy road at times. Ups and downs are the norm especially in these first few years. But getting to spend my days creating beautiful things and doing all I can to make my business a success is a privilege.

It's always nice to get reminders sometimes.

When Michele of My Notting Hill wrote about my blankets and pillows last May, it meant so much to me. We met earlier that month at the Washington Design Center and ELLE DECOR Hall of Fame event when designer Nestor Santa-Cruz used one of my blankets and pillows in the room he decorated in the Showhouse.

Then the amazingly talented interior designer and taste maker Brooke Giannetti chose some of our blankets and pillows for her store Giannetti Home. I thought to myself, "These are great days. Remember how this feels."

And now to see photos of my pillows and blankets there in the store on Brooke's blog Velvet & Linen brings it all full circle. I'm celebrating today!

A little more than a week ago I wrote about having started a new book, Chris Cleave's Little Bee. I completed it yesterday afternoon. He presents a young Nigerian woman and an upper middle class British woman who quite randomly share a horrific experience one day on a beach. Under normal circumstances it's safe to say they probably would have never met. Their unique backgrounds shaped who they were beforehand. Who they are each at the core is what makes recovery and triumph possible. Cleave also creates space for the reader to play a key role in the book. You're not told what to think. You're not told how to feel. His words through both characters are thoughtful, poetic and raw. Here, Little Bee speaks:

"...please agree with me that a scar is never ugly. That is what the scar makers want us to think. But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them. We must see all scars as beauty. OK? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived." -- page 9

I love that Cleave challenged me to think outside my limited life experience. If we're more actively aware of our neighbors around the world--even those we may never meet--maybe we'll all live a lot better.

Clearly I recommend this book to you.

When my copy of the August issue of The World of Interiors arrived last week, I pored over it page-by-page, trying to absorb every morsel. You see I've been wanting a subscription for so long...hesitating whether I subscribe to too many magazines already..and the $100 price tag.. But after quickly scanning several of my friend's copies I was convinced. This was right.
It's starts with the cover. The home of Eric Ossart and Arnaud Maurieres in Southern Morocco. The bright red pillows floating within the panorama of earth tones and evergreen stripes on the beds and wall strike the right balance. Texture. Oh so simple.

A bathroom in the home of Karen Roos in South Africa. The use of dark and light, silver vs. gold, white vs. cream... Mirrors.

The added texture of the natural sponge, set behind glass produce a botanical feel. Old-world, antique, yet polished.

Back to Morocco. I just love a slightly rustic kitchen. The older-world, the better. Yet sophisticated. Attention to detail yet sparse. I love the small wire lights hanging across the kitchen. The dark window panes frame the view outside to an angular outdoor space, softened by a selective use of plants and stone.

And this bedroom..I won't belabor the rest. You can see what I go for. Enjoy.

Other Perspectives.

The last two books I read have added a rich perspective to my days over the last 3-4 weeks. I was invited by a friend and fellow Brooklynite to join an intimate yet diverse book club of women she was forming. I was honored to be asked. About 4 weeks ago eight of us sat around a table on the back porch of her brownstone with wine and nibbles.

I hadn't read the book. A disappointing moment. My procrastination sadly won over. But I really wanted to experience what it was like to be there and promised myself I'd read the first book we'd consider--The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot--afterward. The afternoon before our discussion, I read the New York Times review she sent us and it peaked my interest on many, many levels. I also felt the pang of guilt.

I ended up finishing this great book a week after our get-together. I lost sleep some nights thinking about what this woman back in the 50s and her family has gone through over the years. I reflected on my decision almost 2 years ago to attempt the birth of my daughter at a birth center. Back then, I simply envisioned the most ideal experience and a cold hospital was the furthest thing from my mind. It was also a way to reclaim my power as a woman, capable of giving birth without it being "medicalized". Also having come from ancestors and grandparents from the south some of who migrated north gave me an added connection to the story.

On a reading high, the next book--Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin--was a suggestion from a new friend. Thanks Susanna. The language and descriptions of the highs and lows of Mortenson's experiences over the ten plus years got to me. I think a lot about my own journey of starting my company and the worries I've felt and that surface from time to time. The lives of the people chronicalled in the book made me feel I'm not alone and also thankful to be a part of the collective experience of human hardship that is simply a part of being alive.

And now for the last 3 days I've been reading Little Bee by Chris Cleave. Most of my reading for all 3 books is while waiting on the platform or on the subway from Brooklyn to Chelsea every day. I'm only 50 pages in, but am enjoying the transition of voice between characters. It's too early to give comment on the book as a whole of course, but I'll let you know in a few weeks.

Lately my eye has been seeing embellishment inspiration. Our popular Gade Chief and Saba Chief Blankets incorporate a embroidered embellishment in quiet yet contrasting colors, inherently layering above the flat woven blanket. I've been thinking a lot about conceiving new techniques that raise the texture of the handwoven fabric in an authentic and indigenous way.

These photos were taken from a book I just picked up --- African Textiles and Decorative Arts by The Museum of Modern Art New York -- a pictorial survey of the African arts of textile designs and personal adornment. There's just too many images to scan without it taking the entire day. But it's just too good not to share at least a few favorites.

A year ago I would have never imagined the following spring I'd be able to move my design studio outside the apartment, let alone into a great location in Chelsea NYC.

There between Coachmen Electric Inc. and EZ-EZ Corp. is D. Bryant Archie Textiles..

Sometimes kicking and screaming...I'm managing to learn that even when it seems things aren't happening fast enough, progress IS happening. I guess like trying to watch a beloved plant grow. You can't actually see it happening in the moment. But in time you see the growth and beauty that results.

It's nothing new. Navajo Chief Blankets captured my attention several years ago. I continue to garner inspiration from them every time I visit museums or pick up a new book with the colorful yet sublimely simple stripes. I don't have any Navajo blood in me, but somehow my Cherokee ancestors make me feel kin none the less. Having Native American blood somehow means a shared collective history. And even more to see such beautiful textile documents from long ago fills me up. I still can't get over these strong, simple stripes and geometric lines spanning right to left.

I'm sorry to be out of touch for over a week.. My small family has taken the week to get out of NYC to relax and reconnect in the country. Rhode Island has been our choice to get away for summer vacations the last few years.

Peau Blanket Inspiration.

Also debuting at the end of summer is a new design I call the Peau Blanket. "Peau" is the French word for "skin". We created two colorways for the Peau Blanket--a silver/ charcoal colorway (completely undyed alpaca colors with natural variations) and a gold/chocolate brown colorway we think echoes tiger, leopard and reptile. We think they'll be great neutrals while at the same time dynamic. Animal skins and furs are relevant across all interior design styles, from traditional to contemporary. And as we see they're wonderful translations for fashion.

My Dose of Reality.

I shouldn't have, but I forgot how hard and stressful it is to move. I thought, "No problem. I've got this. We're staying in the building and moving one floor. It's a bigger place." No matter how easy the move, stress creeps in. I'm sorry it's been a while since my last post. No excuse other than being overwhelmed and under-satisfied.

Victories. I found the sofa I wanted. A small sectional for the living room. I think it's perfect for the space. And my husband did a bang up job hanging our new IKEA shades on the windows. The vintage alpaca rug I found at a stoop sale for my daugher's bedroom is growing on me by the day.

And I'm really excited about the blue fabric I'll use for window panels.

And at least I can say I know what I have in my home - the positive side to the long and tedious job reorganizing and finding places for every THING..

And btw, right after dropping all our things in the new apartment last week, we immediately left for 5 days in DC. My daughter's daycare was closed the week of Memorial Day which meant I was taking the week off from work. I thought what could be better than catching up with friends and getting several play dates in with our clan.. So I brought this stressful move thing on myself trying to get everything I wanted. We walked into our new place on Thursday night staring at all the things we needed to unpack and put away.

I'm back now, and will be catching up over the next few days, sharing some great inspiration I've found over the last 10 days.

Seems like all I've been seeing lately is red--but in a good way.

Such as on this lovely woman I saw waiting with me for the Q train in Tribeca.. Not sure if the iphone captured the electric red of her dress. Reminds me of the red I chose for my red plaid shuka blanket coming out at the end of summer.

Bedrooms For Dreaming.

Research for my own bedroom continues. We pick up the keys on Saturday.

Here are five bedrooms I've loved from the moment I saw them; some even from a few years ago. They'd satisfy someone looking for a serene yet dynamic, dare I say colorful bedroom (that's me..). The neutrals provide the structure in balance with metallic gold, marigold, the sea and jewel-tone blues, tangerine and fuchsia found in the pieces of art which seem to be the inspirations for the rooms. To me they're perfection.

More wonderful living rooms, this time from the talented sisters Joan and Jayne Michaels of 2Micheals Design in New York City. I love their artful way of creating a space. Through positioning, color and texture the Michaels elevate individual elements - sofa, chair, pillows, pottery - to sculpture, producing a most unexpected and pleasing result.

A Park Avenue penthouse. I love their use of asymmetry with pillows; the sofas so comfortable and inviting.

A Wooster Place loft. Here too.

And a San Diego home. Loving the bookshelves within the interior architecture.

Living Well in a Small Apartment.

My husband, 20-month year old daughter, greyhound and I moved from from a generous three-bedroom row house in DC. Now it seems we had space for everything. Since September we've been living in a small, one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. We call it our "great experiment" and are still managing to laugh about it as we count down the days until our move to a 2-bedroom in the same building at the end of the month. I'm dreaming & plotting how best to use our still small common space - an open, kitchen/ dining/ living room.

I came across a wonderful slide show of a gorgeous yet comfortable beach house recently completed by Baltimore designer, Patrick Sutton of Patrick Sutton Home. His interiors have such a laid back, casual chic. I fell in love with the study immediately.

And here's the serene yet dynamic guest room from which I'm def taking inspiration.

We began weaving a new blanket for Fall release. It's inspired by shuka cloths worn by the Masaai of Kenya and Tanzania.

Mostly plaids, sometimes stripes, always red. So nomadic, so tribal of course. Traditional shukas are woven into sheeting fabric. Ours will be hand woven of baby alpaca.

Our interpretation for the home will debut at the New York Gift Fair in August.

You can wear it of course. More about wearing a bit later.

Combine a tax refund with 2 years worth of inspiration from Copenhagen Cycle Chic and seeing so many chic women running around on their bikes means I'm getting one too. I love the vintage cruiser look..

But in the end I want single speed, sleek, minimalist and low maintanence. The winner is the U-District by Torker.

I'm already conjuring ways to customize it.. matte gunmetal paint.. white handlebars, seat and tires.. or would cognac be the better foil color against the deep blue and neon yellow ??

For me, street style is the ultimate chic. Anyone who can for the sake of him or herself alone dress for the day in a way that inspires trends of the future sparks a fire inside me.

When conceiving the first entry my mind went to Gwyneth Paltrow.

She comes to mind when I think of an American woman who seems to roll out of bed or work out for that matter, dishevelled and thrown together yet chic.

She pulls off the impression of not dressing to impress anyone in particular. She's just dropping off or picking up the kids at school, right?

And as a mom, I appreciate another who manages to achieve that sexy chic while being a mom every day.

I've committed the no, no of blogging... shamefully it's been over 2 weeks since the last entry. But I've come to share what's been keeping me away. As you know, we did our first show, the AD Show in NYC, March 18-21st - here are some photos taken of our booth:

My yellow tights had a presence all their own - the perfect gift from my mother in law. My husband stands guard ;-)..

I think the booth turned out great. So I'm a happy camper.

We launched a pillow collection based on all the blankets. See all here.

And debuted two new colorways of DAKAR - totally undyed, the natural colors of the alpaca - a dark linen and camel colorways.

We got such a great response a new design studio/ gallery space is in the works !! We can't wait to have a place to show the entire collection.

We're excited to find out at Design Therapy we'll get the chance to see Brad Ford's DIFFA's Dining by Design table at this year's Architectural Digest Home Design Show. I've been talking about the show a lot since it's DBA's first time exhibiting. But I'm also looking forward to seeing all the tables this year, especially this one - I thought they were gone for good. But, the pigs are back!!

DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) has provided more than $35 million to hundreds of AIDS organizations nationwide since it began in 1984. Dining By Design is DIFFA's signature fundraising event, a wonderful way to raise funds and awareness for this amazing cause.

Loved the shape, lack of color, and found unexpected delight in ruffles - something I don't usually like at all. But Krugar's pretty much always chic - on the street and for any event.

I can't believe February is almost over. Things are moving at a clip. Preparing for DBA's first trade show next month. Three weeks and counting down - signage, lighting, (electricity!?), seagrass, the "right" shade of gray, etc. and it all comes down to timing. Don't miss a deadline or pay 30% more!

Renowned fashion designer Alexander McQueen was found dead today. One of our greatest creative forces, his designs inspired my work and took my breath away many a time.

A few years ago before I was even pregnant, I tossed around the name McQueen for my first child.

A great sense of loss if felt around the world.

It's been a breakthrough week. Last Thursday was huge for me. Long story, funny story short.. one of my blankets was in the NY Times Home & Garden column Shopping With called Wrapped Up

New York designer Brad Ford chose my Gade Chief Blanket to be featured there. Thrilling does not begin to explain. Suddenly my 'work' life flashed in front of me as I thought of family and friends, mentors, colleagues, new acquaintances who chose to believe in my talent and ability. There's nothing more fitting than the a simple and straight forward THANK YOU.

First and last, this blog is dedicated to my daughter Ellie Saba, who I aim to inspire in everything I do to pursue her talents and dreams. Because they can come true.
